Photo by @FransLanting Elephants often sleep standing up to avoid pressure from their heavy bodies on their internal organs. But when they are really tired or very relaxed, they may sleep lying down on their sides. I caught this elephant taking a midday nap and she did something I had not seen before. She covered her face with a big floppy ear to screen out light and heat. I love watching elephants; they are so expressive and I always learn something new. If any of you have seen this unusual sleeping behavior I would love to hear from you. Follow me @FransLanting and @ChristineEckstrom for more unusual encounters with elephants. @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #SavetheElephants #Zambia #Elephants #Safari #Wildlife ...more

Photo by @babaktafreshi The World at Night project On this night near San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, I was on a documentary filming project about the pristine night sky of Chile. On this spectacular moment the moon was rising over volcanoes bordering Bolivia, with a cactus forest in the foreground. The Milky Way was still visible high in the sky, before vanished by the rising moon. The three brighter spots in the middle top are Mars, Antares, and Saturn. Photo: @emilypolar This rickety bridge leads deep into one of my favorite forests in the hills of Helambu, Nepal. When I'm in these forests I feel like I'm not alone and I don't mind that one bit. . . This area is recognized as one of the ‘Hidden-Lands’, or Beyul in Tibetan, which are remote regions of the Himalayas that the eighth century Tantric Buddhist Padmasambhava is said to have designated as places for spiritual accomplishment and practice. Tibetan Buddhists consider these lands sacred recognizing the power and blessings they hold for increased experience and practice. Photo by @taylorglenn // The Yellowstone River flows out of the Hayden Valley and plunges 308 feet at Lower Yellowstone Falls marking the beginning of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. It is the largest volume waterfall in the Rocky Mountains. There is also an upper falls just a few hundred meters above. The two sections are formed from the erosion of ancient lava flows. Photo by @drewtrush (Drew Rush) // Sponsored by @GoPro // Captured on @GoPro #ExperienceDifferent // I pulled into the campground along the Colorado River early looking for a campsite and almost immediately I noticed another paramotor sitting covered on the bumper of someone’s van. I could hardly wait for movement from inside the van to quiz the other pilot if they had been flying nearby. It turns out Joe hadn’t yet but we quickly formulated a plan to meet at dawn to fly in Castle Valley the next morning. We woke at camp to light winds and great flying conditions to explore the area around Castle Valley from a different perspective. ...more

Photo by @jessicasamplegram // The ancient city of Matera, said to be the world’s third oldest continuously inhabited settlement, was once so impoverished and dilapidated that it was called the “shame of Italy” by the prime minister in 1950. Today, this vibrant land of dramatic cave dwellings built on a ravine’s edge has been revitalized as a cultural capital and is home to bustling shops, restaurants, bars, galleries and nightclubs which occupy the stone caverns. #italy #matera ...more

Photo by @jeffmauritzen. Early morning light over the Quiraing on the Isle of Skye. Scotland is a great country for hikes and the #IsleofSkye in particular has some truly spectacular landscapes for exploring. If a visit here isn't yet on your list of places to visit, then go ahead and write it in. And while you're at it, go ahead and place it on the list of locations you'd go back to again and again and again...Photo taken while on a previous assignment for #natgeoexpeditions in Scotland. Video by @CristinaMittermeier //As a writer, conservationist and photographer, I get to travel and see so much of the world. Through it all, I am working to create and protect healthy oceans through powerful imagery. This moment, a baby beluga playfully swimming alongside mom in the deep, blue, beautiful, endless Arctic sea, is one of many breath-taking moments I have had the privilege of capturing, let alone experience. #FollowMe at @CristinaMittermeier for more images tying conservation and art together from around the world and check out @Sea_Legacy for a video celebrating Canadian wildlife and wild places on #CanadaDay. #HappyCanadaDay #Baby #Beluga #Ocean #Blue #MarineLife ...more

Photo by @michaelclarkphoto // Peahi roaring earlier this year on the north shore of Maui. Over the last decade I have spent a lot of time in and around the ocean, even though I live in New Mexico. The ocean is incredibly beautiful and terrifying at the same time. The ocean also humbles me every time I step into that great water. #peahi #jaws #maui ...more
